Have you ever wondered about the history of LGBTQI+ rights in Namibia, or been confused about exactly which laws affect the LGBTQI+ community? Have you ever picked up a newspaper or gone online and wished that Namibian media found more effective ways to cover the community’s struggle for basic human rights? Earlier this month, the Namibia Institute for Democracy published The Namibian House: Building Inclusive Spaces for LGBTQIA+ Persons, a guide to LGBTQIA+ history, legislation and media representation. This publication comes at a time where LGBTQI+ rights are in a bigger spotlight than ever – and not always for good reason. Over the past four years we have seen more homophobic views expressed publicly such as people opposing same-sex couple’s right to family, or the backlash to the sodomy law being declared unconstitutional.
Those public responses do not exist in a vacuum. Developments in Namibia’s LGBTQI+ community are affected by Namibia’s specific context. Understanding the way the present is affected by our history, or laws, and the way the media represents different experiences is incredibly important – and Sister Namibia is so excited to share The Namibian House with our audience.
