Girls that run away from home are sometimes seen as misguided and rebellious. But often, we don’t take into consideration what these girls are running from.
Today, we listen to a conversation with a Pastor in Windhoek. Now in her 40s, she reflects on what running away from home was like in her early teens. In a complex story of domestic violence, faith, and street life, we learn what it really means to choose your own path.

Amara Evering is a radio journalist, writer, and storyteller. She has worked as a producer and writer for the award-winning radio station, WPFW FM and is a recipient of the Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship. She’s been recognized for her coverage of the experiences of Black women and girls, international movements, and often untold history.
